Engineer said the section where the fat is congealed is sealed and cannot be opened, so I presume cannot be cleaned out. Therefore water won't go in at all, this was my problem. Is it possible to clear the fat out of the plastic compartment or do I get a new machine ?

The fat will melt if you heat it up, Try pouring boiling water in and closing the door for a while. If that doesn't work point a fan heater on LOW under it for a few hours.
You haven't said what model you have, if you look on the door at the top or the side you will find a label that gives the model number.

Some Bosch machines have a tank on the side that fills with water and is gravity fed. This is easily blocked with debris and just as easily cleared with a bendy wire or plastic cable tie.

If you remove the bottom tray and look on the LHS you may see the water inlet and you may be able to unblock it with some wiggling.

Without knowing the model it is difficult to advise.
A bit late in the day for you but we have a friend who repairs white goods and he recommends using dishwasher cleaner every 3 months or so. I must say I'm sceptical about such things but I use it because he recommends it - he says it prevents fat build-up which is the major cause of dishwasher problems. If jomifl's suggestion works I suggest you try it to give the machine a good clear out.
As an aside, I hear that, surprisingly, dishwasher fires are very common (both my daughter and her mother-in-law have had a dishwasher fire) so NEVER use the dishwasher when you aren't in the house (or overnight).

Thanks jomifi, I will try the hot water, otherwise time for a new one I think, with dishwasher cleaner on a regular basis. My engineer recommended citric acid, but of course it is too late for this machine now. Funnily enough I asked the same question a year ago, it was underneath this one on the AB page ! Thanks again all.
My advice is based on having a Bosch Logixx machine.

Dishwasher cleaner will not help if it is debris blocking the water inlet.

I am looking forward to mine developing a terminal fault as it is utterly useless.

Debris isn't blocking the water inlet as engineer cleared it. Apparently the machine knows if the machine is blocked i.e. By fat, and won't let water in, in first place. Someone told me that ....
