Amount of Water in reservoirs

How do Water Boards measure how much water they have in their reservoirs? And the speed at which it is being consumed on a daily basis?

I'm no expert by a country mile but the levels in the resevoirs are only part of the problem. These are monitored by a big measuring stick on the side of the resevoir or by ariel photos of how low the water is.

But the most important factor is ground water and if this is getting depleted.....we're in trouble !!!

Here in the western U.S. such reservoirs are measured by acre feet. The surface area of the reservoir is known and when it drops by one foot (or multiples) then the amount of acre feet consumed are known. The hydrologists can determine the total voulme of the usable reservoir and predict how much will be remaining after a given period of time...
