By a doctor? It is my opinion you should drink when you are thirsty - though if you are showing signs of being dehydrated, you may need to prompt yourself to drink - otherwise your body tells you what is right.

You'll do it if you down a litre before midday.
measure what 250 mls is - a bit bigger than a cup
first 250 when you rise - as many cups of tea as that is
250 between 9 and 10
250 betwen 10 and 11
and the final 250 before midday et voila
you only need a litre before bed
I imagine someone connected with the NHS has suggested this.
easy to do - I noticed I started this after a bout of septicaemia and concluded that it had permanently affected my kidneys....
anyway good luck....

ANY fluid- even coffee - counts towards this "2L a day" you do not need to imbibe 2L of water other than food and beverages in order to be adequately hydrated. The true test is as Sqad says, and simply whether you feel thirsty or not.
There is fluid in food. There is fluid in soft drinks, or milk, or tea, or coffee, and the amount of fluid you take in is far in excess of any mild diuretic effect that the coffee or tea might have...
