How many substitutes is each team allowed in a game of American Football? - 2, 12, 24 or 32?

No answers so far! I thought the number of substitutes was unlimited so long as there are no more than 11 players for each team on the pitch at the same time. Does anyone have any views?

I think it was the case at one time, that subs were limited. Today, I'm pretty sure they allow "free substitution".
Whole teams can be swapped depending on the type of play they want to make.
