We have so few national festivities in this country, so I always look forward to Christmas as a time of celebration and enjoyment. But now what do we have to look forward to? Bad weather, probably, Easter eventually, a remembrance of a horrible death and improbable resurrection. Other countries seem to have far more national holidays and occasions for jollification.
Hi all. Yes Buenchico, Burns night: but why do we now have it in England? We didn't use to until quite recently, and I'm pretty sure the Scots don't celebrate St George's day.
Yes Anne, they certainly do here in Yorkshire. Our village pub has
a meal with haggis etc. and a piper and recitations of his poems. God knows why, there are no Scots here.
In the past I have worked many bank holidays, not for extra pay but for it being in my contract in the career I chose. Our fore fathers battled long and hard to 'win' these holidays for us, yet people will work at most shops etc for the extra money. What happened to family time. Would we starve if the shops were closed for a couple of days.
