I have columns of figures where some cells display $ symbol to the left, separated from the amount, which is oriented to the right.
However, other cells show both $ and amount oriented to the right.
I want to set them all to appear as in the first example but cannot unlock the secret.
Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried highlighting all the cells in a column, right-clicking, selecting Format Cells and then set them all to currency?
Are the cells in the same column?
Have you tried search and replace to remove the $ signs?

I'd do a search and replace to convert the cells to numbers only.
You'd need to check whether you want to get rid of $ or $+space or whatever.
Once the cells contain only numbers you can then apply appropriate formatting.
