Sounds like you have it set to automatically defrag on startup, and it's something you might have set it up to do inadvertently. Haven't used Win 98 for a while so I can't advise how to do it exactly, but it shouldn't be difficult to change. It might be reached through Control Panel.

Use the 'Run' command from the Start menu and enter msconfig. Look at the startup items and untick the defragmenter if it'd there.

Thanks snook and wideboy. I've just checked through Contol Panel and Run, as suggested, but I've done it before and I couldn't find a way to shut it off. I must have set it inadvertantly as you say. It's just a nuisance - nothing urgent. I click on Stop to cancel it immediatly, but it comes back every time I start up.

Thanks.

Let it finish defragging once, and see if it still happens.

Have you looked at Start/Programs/Startup?
Question Author
I did that Ethel - a few weeks ago; it took seven hours to defrag! It still wants to defrag every time I switch on.
Question Author

Startup is greyed out wideboy.

Is it a scheduled task? (Control panel > scheduled task)
Question Author

I can't find scheduled task anywhere on my control panel j2buttonsw but I'll look in Help to check it out.

Thanks...

Found it Buttons!!! Thanks a million! I've rescheduled the defragmenter to start once a month on the first Monday.

Brilliant! Many thanks to all who offered help.
