where does the saying "pigs may fly" come from? did a pig once fly?!?!

Oddly enough, it referred to them flying tail-first! Since then, it has appeared in various forms. Here's one from Lewis Carroll in the mid-19th century...
"I've a right to think," said Alice sharply..."Just about as much right," said the Duchess, "as pigs have to fly."
