An A380 belonging to Emirates crossed the Atlantic on 3 engines after an engine failed just one hour out of New York JFK.

Yes, Emirates customer service is supposed to be fantastic. Don't forget lots of planes fly the Atlantic with the only 2 engines they have.

Purdie , 2 engine aircraft are only allowed to fly the Atlantic under ETOPS rules. Extended Twin Operations. This means they have to go via the 'stepping stones route' that takes them over Newfoundland, Greenland and Iceland so that an airport is always in reach of single engine flight. This one flew the southern route direct from New York to Kuwait ! just one more fault and they were in the drink! the A380 can not maintain a safe altitude on 2 engines!

I like Emirates Airlines and having lived in Dubai for an awful long time when they started their own airline with such good service and customer care we all flew them and I would still do so.

Eddie I have only flown back last week directly across the Atlantic from Caribbean to Gatwick on a BA twin engined 777.

I believe the 777 has a longer Extended Operations time of 330 mins whereas older aeroplanes only had 180mins

The ETOPS on triple seven aircraft allows it to fly anywhere as long as it is about 5 1/2 hours from a diverstion airport. That means it can go just about anywhere. If it diverts from the Caribbean it could go to the Azores and en route to Brasil it could go to West Africa. They go across the Pacific as well. I don`t know why the Emirates continued on but they wouldn`t have done it if it wasn`t within the aircraft`s limits.

I think there is an element of "Let`s get back to our own base (or as near as damn it) so that we can get the parts/maintenance" and not all airports can take an A380 so they might as well keep going in that instance (if it is safe to do so, which it was)
