I have just had to disable a mains powered detector that was emitting a nonstop screeching noise. It had screeched once two weeks ago, once again last week and had been making a hissing noise all the time culminating in this shrieking. I have no connected gas appliances in my home, I live in a block of flats. Can anyone explain what this was happening for. The unit was about 10 years old. The casing was brittle.
