Motorhomes Towing Cars

I occasionally see holiday motor homes towing small cars on a rigid towbar.

What's that all about? They don't need a set of wheels on holiday, as they have a motorhome.

The Dutch and Germans go for this in a very BIG way. Who wants to stow away the crockery,take down the awning disconnect the electricity, water, sewerage, demount the satellite dish, remove part of the garden fence and and patio just to to the shop for a packet of fags?

It would be much cheaper & enviromentally friendly if they used tents like us proper campers! :-)

I've spotted someone doing something similar with a smartcar on the back (I don't think it was being towed, just kind of "hooked on" - no wheels on the ground).

I thought it was a excellent idea, if you're into that motorhome/caravanning thing - but then, the first thing I would want to do if I was at a motorhome/caravan camp is get the heck off it!

I used to have a photo from about 30 years ago of a boat on the Oxford canal that had a close coupled pontoon behind it carrying a Renault 5! Theres nothing new! On a legal note, I wonder how many of the drivers have got the correct licence? It should certainly be a B+E, but knowing the size of some of these vehicles I wonder if plod would like to see you with a C1+E, even though its not a commercial vehicle?

I would love to have seen them getting the car off the pontoon, Sddsddean.

They always used to pick somewhere they knew with either a hard bank (such as ina marina) or slipway. Simply detached the pontoon, spun it through 90 degrees and moored it tight against the 'bank', out with a couple of ramps and off you go. I think the main reason they did it was so the could continuously tour the waterways without having to go back to a marina every weekend...the next week they just drove to where they had left the boat!

One thing people should be aware of. If you want to take a small car abroad on an ''A-frame'' it's OK in some countries but in Spain it has to be on a trailer, but it's a pain if you want to drive to Portugal because you have to go through Spain to get there
