The rust may have been caused by the condensation/steam generated when cooking which has lingered on. To try and avoid this it's advisable to leave the microwave door open after use for a while to allow the moisture to evaporate, or wipe the inside down. We've had our Sharp microwave for about 20 years now and it's still in good condition so if you adopt this practice your new microwave should hopefully last much longer.
In the past Ive just put my mobile phone inside the microwave and tried ringing it. As the microwave oven is microwave "tight" then the phone should not ring.
If its the electrics your worried about, you could always run an extension cable down to the bottom of your garden. Turn the microwave on, and take cover!
