Methyl, thanks, I can see the 2 airfields now I didn't spot the smaller airfield on Clanads link. It really is much smaller and a lot nearer the town.
Clanad, thanks, your explanation as to how it could have happened explains it well. I was thinking that all commercial flights went into airports with fully automatic landing / location / ID facilities now.

In 1960 a Pan Am cargo 707 landed at RAF Northolt instead of Heathrow.

Hi EDDIE51, first time I landed in Saudi it was at the old airport but I actually stayed at the new one for the first couple of days as the company wanted to train us on some new equipment before being sent on to our new airports. This was early January 1981. Think the one you are thinking of happened around that time.
Hi, I used to fly into Jeddah then went on to Al Wedjh. Saudi Airlines used to train their pilots a lot at the airport at Wedjh and we used to see some quite bad landings and takeoffs. Even got to be part of them on occasions as we were often allowed to go with them when they were doing touch and goes usually on 737s or Tristars.
