Poorly Ficus Tree!

I have just rescued a ficus tree which is about 6 feet tall but has been in a tiny pot for years without food etc. I have re-potted it and there are signs of new leaves at the end of the branches but it has vast areas of twiggy stalks without leaves. When should I prune it and if so, how far back?
