The major consideration is the reason for the cough. Coughing is a symptom of asthma and should not be suppressed if the cough is a reaction to an allergic matter.
In your case it is fair to say your cough is the lungs trying to rid themselves of the nasties that have clogged them up from smoking. All heavy smokers experience this when they stop smoking.
Eventually your lungs will be much clearer and the coughing will stop.
Take the cough medicine unless you feel your chest is tight because of the asthma.
And very good luck to you! Think of the money you will be saving (more than 3000 a year!!) - and denying the government of the punative taxes.

so you are more worried about benelyn affecting your asthma and breathing than the 40 cigarettes a day?!?
Anyway, if that is what it says then consult your doctor first. But you may want to go to the docs anyway if your getting a constant cough. Trust me, I gave uop smoking 3 yrs ago and I NEVER got a cough after smoking again.
