Senior Railcards

Any elderly person who has to do frequent journeys by rail will appreciate the value of Senior Railcards, but did you know you can often buy these cards cheaper by visiting your local council?
Not all councils offer this facility, but the ones that do can enable you to buy a Senior Railcard at a much reduced price.
I have just purchased mine for £19.50 (as opposed to the full price of £30) and with some councils they only cost £15.
If you are not aware of this concession, ask at your council offices, and you may be surprised.

Anyone who doesn't have access to the discounted prices offered via some local authorities is advised to buy a 3-year Senior Railcard online. (They're not available at stations or elsewhere). They cost £70, saving you £20 (or more if the price goes up for either the second or third year).

Dave, I didn't know that - I thought I was being ahead of the game in buying the 3-year card and saving £20 (earlier thread refers) - I bet you can't use the tesco vouchers AND the on-line concession :-(

where are you, Denis -w hich council? I've never heard of that in these parts!

My local council is Selby in North Yorkshire, but I do know that Goole in neighbouring East Yorkshire have a similar scheme.
On contacting the council they give you a promotional code to use, and you can buy the Railcards either online or by phone.

Yes, tamaris, but is still cheaper to buy them annually through the council.

If you can - they don't offer that round here. All we get is the bus pass.
