Dyeing A Material

I want to dye a show jumping helmet from dark navy to black. I assume the covering is synthetic velvet. - Has anyone any suggestions please? Obviously the dye must be permanent and not run when wet! Thank you

If it's synthetic you'll probably find that it won't grab dye, in fact in my experience it'll just discolour in patches and make the fabric look awful.

Might be easier to reupholster (if that's a word for it) the helmet.

I would check with the manufacturer of the helmet. It is a safety item ! Might be safest to just buy a black one ...

thanks Iggle Piggle but for what I want to use it for, changing the colour won't affect the safety - good idea about contacting the manufacturer though.
