covering kitchen worktops

my kitchen worktops need to be recovered as i cant afford to replace them, i understand you can still get fablon, but after reading reviews i dont know if it would be a strong enough covering to deal with hot pans, tiling may be an option as well, as it would be strong, but then the grouting would harbour dirt? ideas would be greatly appreciated as money is too tight to replace the whole thing.

Whilst I don't have direct experience I figure you aren't supposed to be putting hot pans on worktops anyway. My guess is that Fablon would likely melt.

As for tiles, well I often wondered that, but I guess if you use a germ killing cleaner regularly and thoroughly then there would be minimal risk. After all many folk do have tiles.

thanks old geezer my thoughts on fablon melting are the same as yours,may well go down the tile route as the top will be a nightmare to take off and replace fully and i cant afford to do this

Wouldn't worktops be cheaper than tiles?

I tried using fablon to cover some work tops once. I can't tell you how durable it was because it looked so awful that I pulled it all off almost straight away.

Is it just somes areas that are just well worn or the whole off it? If it is just well worn/marked in a few places, you could buy some marble chopping boards to cover the worse areas until you can save enough for new worktops. Or even maybe some of those glass boards.

I tiled my worktop years ago and it was fine I butted the tiles up against each other instead of leaving a gap for grouting . They looked OK and meant I could manage withou replacing the worktop for a few years. Plain white tiles are very cheap.

If you do tile your worktops then use a coloured grout. You can buy grout already coloured, or we have used dylon fabric dye in waterproof white grout to acheive the colour of our choice

Formica used to be the answer. I don't know if it is still on sale!.
