If you went to your GP he/she would have to refer you to a neurologist to test for neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia etc. I'd only do this if you experience a significant deterioration in short-term memory, ability to identify commonly used items and reaction time.

In PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scans for any activity including sleeping, the entire brain "lights up" in nearly every area indicating a great amount of cortical activity taking place during the execution of nearly all cognitive tasks. More than 60% of the brain is active even during REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep or dreaming.
We physically can't stop ourselves from thinking. It's a good point that we perhaps focus too much on trifles and don't rest enough but 'too much thinking' over-simplifies a range of problems.
