when i save something on my pc, from where do i retrieve it?

No picture of a magnifying glass? What sort of things are you wanting to search for? A document? A scan? A downloaded file?...

Assuming you use MS Windows, what version do you have ? Search is different on different ones.
If you open the word processor you used to write the letter, can you reopen it from the recent files list that most office applications have ?
If so do so and next time save somewhere specific, or better yet choose save as and see where it defaults to, as that is where it probably saved last time.
Just hoping you didn't hit 'quit' when you thought you'd hit 'save'.

Next time, hit "Save As" rather than just Save, then you can put it in whichever folder you choose, and call it what you like.
If you open Word, then click on the Microsoft button on the top left of your screen, I get a dropdown menu of recent documents I've worked on, you can just click on them to open them up again. Would that work for you?
