Crisps

I am sure that I read somewhere that one of the crisp manufacturers starting making crisps on a commercial scale after launching a competition which invited people to send in odd shaped potatoes - thus obtaining their main ingredient for the price of a prize. Has anyone else ever heard this or know any more about it?

Must've had a lot of entries to be able to start a commercial business from them. Sounds a tall tale to me.
