I have joined Ancestry but come to a halt with everything.......does 'Find my Past' have anything different on it or is it all much the same?

much the same only less... but it does have occasional things ancestry doesn't, so worth a look if you have the chance. (I did this when I got a free trial and didn't find a darn thing but you may be luckier.) Maybe your library has a sub?

I have subscribed to findmypast for several years. It is cheaper to take out an annual subscription if you are going to do a lot of research. I find this site excellent.

I found a lot of my tree on Genes Reunited (and it was cheaper than Ancestry).
Not saying GR is any better but worth a go.

Have you looked on the free site familysearch.org lately? They have updated it and its quite good now, I found a lot of early information around 1700s which of course the free Births Marriages and Deaths site (BMD) doesn't have as it only starts in 1837.

I've been thinking about you recently. Did all go well with Christmas and the funeral?

Maize......how kind of you to think of me.....Christmas was difficult and having to wait nearly 3 wks for the funeral was hard. I'm back at work now which is taking my mind off everything, some days are worse than others though!

I've been thinking about you a lot. I'm pleased it's all over and I hope you've managed to cope with your loss. I'm doing some befriending with the older folk in the village...I start next week. I'm hoping it's going to fill the hole Mum left :o(

I'm sure you will find that very fulfilling.....I've thought about doing some voluntary work too as I find I'm at a loose end in the afternoons - I used to visit my Mum everyday and I'm missing that so much, not just my Mum but all the staff I had made friends with in the nursing home. I expect you are missing your Mum just as much as I miss mine.........sad isn't it?

It is..but what I found really sad was the waiting list of lonely people. The lady I'm visiting has been waiting 9 months for someone to visit and there were about 20 more on the waiting list.... If we have the time and inclination it's so worthwhile yelenots...I'll let you know how I get on. xxx

What a lovely scheme that is Mazie, just wish I had more time I could organise one near to us. May suggest this at a future church meeting. Where is the waiting list, how do you know who would like a visit - do you advertise?

why have you come to a halt? Did your family land here from another planet?

Sometimes Dot you do come to a dead end. For example, in our family history there were two men living in the same village with exactly the same name and only month different in their birthdays, so can't decide which one to trace back from.

Here;s the problem… Ancestry is owned and operated by the LDS (Mormon) Church, here in the U.S. It is a fact that they have the most complete genealogical records anywhere in the world. For a long time it was more American centered, but over the years it has gathered an unbelievable collection. It's based in Provo, UT… home to Brigham Young University and nearly more of a center for Mormonism that Salt Lake City...

As an aside, they have a huge… huge storage site up Cottonwood Canyon just east of Salt Lake City, Utah. I've been past the entrance a number of times. It is well guarded and unapproachable and the entrance is two well constructed steel doors capable of withstand all but a direct nuclear attack. (It's part and parcel of several aspects of the church for the most dedicated members).

At any rate, most of the other available sites rely on the LDS collection for their own data bases. They expect to add to their collection from subscribers.

Additionally, since FamilySearch has been mentioned, here's a recent article on the agreement between Ancestry and FamilySearch…

Clanad......interesting article. I've been using Dustydocs.com which is also runs by LDS - I find it really helpful!
