Cold Duck is the answer - technically a sparkling burgundy is used.....
Back in the 1970s, there was a restaurant in St Ives (top end of Fore Street), that had pretty good food and an odd owner. He didn't have any rosé on his wine list - preferring to mix red and white wine together and chill it down.......
Sure it wasn't Torquay DT?
St Ives - about four doors up on the right as you went towards the Sloop end of the street. Wot a memmury!
Just thought it sounded a bit Basilesque.
Well I had a mate at Uni who was quite 'proper' and well brought up. Took his gf off to the local Chinese and decided to order a bottle of white wine.

It came at room temp, so he moaned that he wanted a chilled one.

With complete aplomb the Chinese waiter disappeared and came back with a bucket of ice and tongs, promptly to place two cubes of ice in each glass.

Andrew was horrified, well certainly speechless.
He sounds a bit of a chump. You can't even get a decent white (or red, or rose) in 99% of Chinese restaurants even today, never mind in the 1920s.
It must be a Chinese thing. The first time I went to London in the 60's I was gobsmacked to be offered ice in my wine in a Chinese restaurant.
