You can drop in bits of kibble too. These last aaaaages, and although they can be a bit messy as they melt, the dogs love them.
There is actualy a product on the market which I have used with a grea deal of success, its in the form of a hard plastic ball with two small holes in it, the idea is you put a handful of kibles in it ( make sure you buy the right size) and they drop out of the holes at random as the dog rolls it around the floor, it should only take a little encouragement for him to get the hang of it.
