Exactly dzug. I work in a Post Office and we have recently had notification that the old style £50 notes are being withdrawn. Maybe your friend has some old style £50 notes? If so if she takes them in to her local Post Office or her bank they should be able to exchange them for her.

you may be thinking of chequew - they have been reprieved
as removing them would be age-ist
New fivers are plastic notes, great for laundering
Isn't this about the new design of £50 note

I got some plastic notes a couple of years ago in Zambia. They are fab.
Banknotes are withdrawn regularly.
Think your friend may have heard the John Houblon £50 is being withdrawn on 30 April 2014.

emmie - did you read my post? The Post Office have given NO notification to staff that Bank of England bank notes are to be withdrawn. HOWEVER, the old style £50 bank notes are being withdrawn. The new style have already been out for a couple of years.
£50 notes are being withdrawn from circulation but you will always be able to change them at a bank just not spend them in a shop. Plastic notes are being introduced but the old ones will not be withdrawn. They will just be replaced when they are too damaged or dirty to keep in circulation , just as they are at present. A post office worker should have known better than to say things like that.
It is not just the current £50 note that is being withdrawn it is the entire denomination, there will be NO £50 notes only £5, £10 and £20 ones.
Think you may be mistaken, EDDIE51

The Houblon £50s are being withdrawn.
The Boulton and Watt remain the current £50 notes.

Hope so - have got a pile of them under my water-proof floorboards.
Yes I got it wrong, though there is a proposal to withdraw £50 notes completely.
The Bank of England says that they are increasingly getting less used. No odds to me I can't remember when I last even saw one.

.. it won't be yet, the counter staff shouldn't be scaring people this way ..

More likely the customer didn't understand what she was told.

No dzug, the member of staff wasn't sure she should accept them and had to check with another staff member who gave the advice. And these were £20 pound notes.
Best way to change old fiftys at PO is to buy one 2nd class stamp per note as PO wont give a straight exchange.
