I lost a good friend last week. Yes, it was a shock. She kept her figure slim, ate healthily (no red meat) drinking only on social occasions, went to the gym regularly and really looked after herself. The suddenly, a stroke and she was gone. She was six months younger than me. I will miss her, her sense of humour and her laughter.

It makes you think about getting older and the changes you have to make. Giving up high heels and wearing lower ones or flat shoes, three-quarter length sleeves to cover the arms and elbows, higher necklines, longer skirts, no tight jeans. Also the clothes in the wardrobe seem to suddenly shrink, and as for make-up, forget the green I used to love, only browns now.

I dread the day I get arthritic fingers. I find it hard enough now to squeeze a bottle while unscrewing the top to get it open. At times I have to use a magnifying glass to read small prints. If anyone warns you what getting old is really like, would you have believed it? Maybe not, you have to experience it I suppose before you realise how different it is.
Meantime, I shall take just one day at a time and hope I can still recognise myself in the mirror in the future.

You can follow all medical advice.....diet, exercise, non smoking and drink only in moderation, but the bottom line is that there are no guarantees for longevity ............it is almost all in the genes. There are no pluses or advantages in getting old.........

As Bette Davis once said" Old age is no place for sissies" .
Wasn't Quentin Crisp quite advanced in years before he enjoyed the fruits of fame?
he was, but he was infamous long before.
I too am sad to hear about your friend - I too overlooked saying that earlier :-(

I lost a dear friend to ovarian cancer 15 years ago, there was no sign of it until very near the end.
good friends are hard to find, like a lovely partner, so when you lose them, it leaves a massive hole.
I am sorry about the loss of your friend, Butterbun. I hope you have other friends who can help you fill the gap that she has left.

Forget about getting older. Just treasure each day and live it as you see fit.
(Please don't go back to the green eye shadow though!)
Try purple, Butterbun xx
BB...if you love green eyeshadow....wear it! A subtle green with a smudged eyeliner can look stunning.....

In memory of your friend just grow old as disgracefully and happily as you want!.....♥
Sorry to hear that you have lost your friend and how much you miss her. However, rather than think you now have to grow older in some pre-subscribed manner do as you please and dress as you wish. I've learnt life is far too short to give a stuff about what others think. Just enjoy yourself as much as you can.
Hello butterbun. I can empathise with your feelings. Time was I would wear my best outfits to engagement parties, weddings, even the odd christening. Now I wear them to funerals. As old age creeps up on us we are reminded every day of the things we have difficulty in doing, if we can do them at all.

However, there still are many pleasures in life to enjoy. I suspect this heavy feeling you have now will pass somewhat, especially when Spring comes about. It has been a long winter for many. For the sake of your lost friend continue to laugh and enjoy the parts of life that you can. She sounds like a lovely person and you could do far worse than to make your life a tribute to her whenever and wherever you can.

Remember, life is for the living and we all need to grab precious happiness at every opportunity. Best wishes to you :)
