Cleaning Tapestry

I have been left a tapestry footstool by a friend.
It is in excellent condition, but the tapestry is in need of cleaning.
Any ideas on a way to do this without spoiling it would be welcome.

I'd use a dry shampoo, very sparingly, and brush it out carefully with a soft brush.

^ I'm assuming you mean a stitched needlepoint tapestry, not a woven one?
