It is a genuine Windows warning of a possible disk problem, not a virus or that sort of thing - but NOTHING TO BE WORRIED ABOUT and a repair shouldn't be necessary. Run chkdsk and it will almost certainly fix the problem.

CHKDSK can ce run under windows Zabado.
From the Start menu open Computer.
Right-click on disc C and choose Properties.
Under the Tools tab you will find Check disc.
Select that - you will then have to restart the computer as the system disc can't be checked whist windows is running. On restart the disc will be checked and then Windows will start.

I can't back up the PC to my portable hard drive because :- ( and I quote ) "windows back up could not backup any of the drives included in the back up". Also when I went to disc C and tried to check the disc, I clicked on check disc and nothing happened. Maybe I should just take it to the repair shop, but thanks for all of your help.
I really would like to have some more info on the 'Pop-up'. Were you on the Internet when it materialised or had you just switched-on your computer/laptop.
It could be that some malware has arrived on your 'doorstep'. In which case you need to download and run a scan with Malwarebytes. Make sure you choose the Free Edition and reject all offers for a download or trial run of the Pro item. :-
