I have all the answers to clued lights except 38D.

I can guess most of the unclued lights but cannot see the connection.

Can someone confirm that 4D is a last name of a famous politician?
8D is the name of a famous Son?
And any clue for 13D? Nothing seems to fit. I have ??M?DAL?

4d yes - Us president
8d yes - nothing else fits
the other with the 2 above is 24a - google them if you don't get their connection

13d- it's in the trio with 9d and 30d (this is the 2 word answer) Google 9d (its the one referred to in the preamble - "ignoring one definite article)

For the other trio - easier to spot what needs to be highlighted first and then you should see how it connects to the above 2 trios, and hopefully you will get the connection for the other trio.

Not sure of any combination yet.

I see the word (long) to be marked is in the last 4 lines, I think.

The three words at 12A, 16A and 40A are iffy at best for connecting with that word. One of them could be Notes and hence reference related.

The K in Koreans comes from 12 A, correct?

I have 30D as ?O?AME. So two words can be: ?o as one word and ?ame as another.
13A can be only one possible word with middle letter being O.

Will work on finding the 19th century novel next.
