Problem With Skype

I am having a problem connecting to skype. I can sign in to the My Account through my skype ID and also through microsoft, but the page I have is nothing like the page shown in faqs.

I am obviously missing something because when I click the desktop icon and enter the same details it cannot connect

PS I also been sent some confirmation ID codes but have no idea what to do with them. I have checked both my email addresses and found nothing requesting these.
