I know this has been aired before but about fifteen years ago, I won a prize from TV Times 'Letter of the Week' for pointing out that the commercial TV companies increase the volume when the ads come on. WHY is it still happening? Can't we do something about it? Is there some body we can complain to?

its to wake my dad up after he falls asleep watching tv, its really funny to watch him jump when the adverts come on
I heard (but it could be a myth) that, as some people go to make a cuppa during the ads, the increase the volume so you can still hear them from the kitchen.

You can complain to the Advertising Standards Authority as it's contrary to the Committee of Advertising Pratice (Broadcast) TV Advertising Standards Code Rule 6.9 (Sound levels in advertisements).
