We have just received our Council Tax bill for 2006/2007. Last year it was �826, this year it's �1019. Can someone tell me what percentage rise this is please?

In case you wanted to work it out for future use:

�1019 - �826 = 193 rising difference

Answer of �193 divided by original �826 = 0.2337

x 100% = 23.4%

Don't know what happened there. Anyway,

826 = 1.2336561 which I rounded down to 1.23. The number after the decimal point is the percentage increase.

on the top of my bill it says how much it has increased percentage wise. Have you added a 12 storey extension in the last year by any chance???

That sounds like a big increase. Were you previously getting an discount of some sort that you are not now getting?

No we didn't get a discount last year. We only moved back into our house last May and paid the pro rata for the rest of the year (�126 x 6) This bill has really shocked me as I thought it was only going to rise by 4.5% (as per the news and papers!)

well that makes sense then .. btw 6 x 126 isnt 826

Anyway, thats not a 23% increase, you are paying for 12 months this time, not 11 as you did last year (still cant see how you only got to pay 6 months worth if you moved back in in may though)

Yes I know 6 x 126 isn't 826. The 826 was the full tax, we only paid for 11 months because we weren't here for the first month of the financial year. The fact is that the bill has gone up from 826 to 1019 which is a 23% increase! We informed the council that we had moved back in May but by the time they had sorted out the bill it was nearly the end of August, we paid the first instalment in September and the last one in February, and the charge was for 11 months but divided into 6 monthly payments.

As established, it's the difference, divided by the original sum, multiplied by 100.

That's a shocking rise!! Have they revalued your house in the meantime and discovered lots of home improvements which add value to your property or is everyone in your area the same?
Have you recently had an Olympic standard athletics arena built nearby with all the accompanying transport links?
