PPI was sold on mortgages as well as credit cards, smurfchops. If you have your old documentation and see of it included PPI or not.
If you haven't got any documentation then go to the Abbey/Santander web site and download their PPI Questionnaire.
Fill in as much if it as you can and send it off. They have to reply and tell you if you have PPI or not.

DO NOT GO TO A CLAIMS COMPANY. It is easy to do.
Yes, you first need to establish whether you paid PPI. Then you need to check whether your circumstances match the criteria for misselling
Bear in mind the timescales as your mortgage ended more than 6 years ago.

"If your policy ended over six years ago: The ‘statue of limitations’ means banks don’t need to keep records that are over six years old. However, there is no official cut-off time so if you’ve still got the paperwork, while your chances of success are a little lower with older loans, many still dosuccessfully reclaim."

Most PPI was on credit cards. If you had it on a mortgage it may be harder to show it was mis-selling
