Born and bred in North London. and want to get away.

Wife and I are now going into retirement and looking for somewhere quiet although not too secluded.

Someone recently suggested Yoevil. I have never been there but planning a visit in the near future.

Has anyone any experience of Yoevil and the surrounding area regarding the people, shops , recreation (pubs), general living conditions and places to see?

I have looked at various web sites and although they are very informative as far as facts and figures are concerned they don't really give a personal opinions.

Any information will be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi dilligaf, before you make any rash moves I would strongly suggest you travel around a bit and have look at different places for yourself. Make a short break holiday out of it. Remember 'one man's meat is another man's poisson'. I personally like very much where I live and your south-east pound would certainly go a long way up here but, many of my relations steer clear of the place. (maybe it's me !!).

I would love to live in the Lake District but, I hear it rains like h**l up there, so maybe not such a good idea.

We have all heard of people retiring who up sticks for a country hide away, leaving established friends and familiar surroundings, only to find it's not so green over the hill.

When you are young you can afford the time to watch the trees and plants grow and mature. When you retire, mostly what you see is what you are stuck with. So, take your time - you are only going to get one crack at it. Best of luck !!

Hi waimarie, thanks for your very constructive reply.

We have spent many long weekends visiting vaious places weighing up the pros and cons of each.

Like you, I would love the Lake District but as my wife and I discussed dampness could cause problems later in life.

Another problem could be loss of licence as we get older. Sons and grandaughter still in London and we don' want to be too isolated from them. This problem also rules out the Yorkshire Moors and the Dales, both magnificent places (if we were younger)

Norfolk nice but boring..

Cornwall and Devon favourite but very hilly. At the moment no problem but in a few years who knows? Have to be careful as this will hopefully be our last move.

Next stop Yeovile, hence the original question.

Once again many thanks for your ideas.
