How can I transfer my funds to an NZ account without paying a conversion charge that banks will charge. Am I better off with a bankers draft or travellers cheques. or just a direct electronic transfer.

Not familiar with banking protocol but suggest you mail the biggest NZ bank; google for "westpac nz"
You might even get an honest answer.
