Hi there - If someone has a basic bank account (ie, no overdraft or debit card) and the account has been bad in the past (ie bouncing direct debits and bank charges etc), roughly how long would a bank like to see the account being in credit and being run well before they will let you upgrade?

Depends on what the upgrade is to. Genearlly a minimum of 6 months. Once you have applied, if unsuccessful, you cannot apply again for 6 months.

They will also credit score you and look to see if everythig else is eing paid correctly etc.If you have any unsatisfied defaults, late payemtns etc, they probably still won't upgrade your account.

Make sure you go on voter's role where you live. This is proabbly the biggest negative on a credit score - not showing up on VR.
I agree with Vic. Assuming you have covered all the bases as Vic suggests, the banks like to see historical evidence of you living within your means, with regular credits to your account.
