baby monitors are fantastic gadgets - just make sure you get one with varying frequences just in case you find out that one of your neighbours has a similar monitor - we could pick up the little girl next door but one until we changed the frequency!
Good Luck!
A recent survey showed that babies who share the same room (not bed) as their parents until they are 6 months old have a reduced risk of cot death. It's something to do with sensing their mothers presence, but also probably due to an increased likelihood of mum noticing something wrong or responding more rapidly to any changes in LOs breathing etc. I breast fed and it was fantastically useful to be right there. Once wee guy turned 6 months he moved into his own room without any issues whatsoever.....but I did dislike having to get up in the cold nights to feed him!!! Personnally, for my first child, I couldn't have stuck him in a room on his own from birth. We were just getting to know each other and I had a lot to learn, so it was lovely to have him close by and reassured us all.
