Folks,

I downloaded a lot of pics from my camera of a recce of a hill walk I had recently done using Picasa3. I uploaded them to a remote server as usual and sent the folder to a lot of my friends. When I accessed Picasa 3 today all the pics had gone without trace, no longer there on my D drive where they are usually kept. As these pics are stored on a remote server as well, how can I recover them? I have had one of my friends forward the pics I sent to him and I have them in one of my e-mail folders which is better than nothing.

Files are never 'in' Picasa 3. They're simply on your hard drive somewhere and Picasa 3 is one of many programs you can use to access them. So try looking for them without involving Picasa 3.

Assuming that they're in jpeg format (which is the default file format for every digital camera I've ever come across), run a search for *.jpg in order to find all jpeg files on your computer. (Take care to check that the search is configured to check all of your drives unless you're 100% certain that there's no point looking anywhere other than drive D). When the results appear you can click on the column headings to sort the list (e.g. by date) and hopefully locate your pictures.

You've asked us how you can retrieve your pictures from a remote server but you've not told us the nature of that server or the method you used to upload them. If, for example, you stored them in a bit of spare space allocated to your personal website by using ftp to upload them, you can simply use ftp to download them back again. However if you've uploaded them to an image-hosting website, such as Flckr, Rajce or Webshots, then the means to get your pictures back again will depend upon the way that particular website works. We need more information!

I found the files on my "C" drive. However that hasn't solved my problem. Let me explain.

I came home yesterday with about 100 new pics on my camera. I downloaded them using Picasa3 and checked my "C" drive to see if they arrived safely, which they did. So far so good. I then returned to my pics and edited them. The folder with the pics was displayed on the left hand side of the screen with all my other photo files below them listed by date. Everything normal. I then closed Picasa3 and sometime later I opened it again. To my despair the latest folder was no longer listed at the top of the list of folders on the left hand side of the screen. Fortunately I still had the pics on the camera unlike the previous time. I checked my "C" drive the folder was still there. The problem seems to be that although the folder is still in the "C" drive Picasa3 cannot access it. Does this help.
