Hi, I've just started training for the Race for Life 5k. I am not a natural runner so I am following the suggested programme. I am getting pain though in my shins, I am warming down afterwards, any suggestions how to overcome this? Thanks.

It's possibly something that with lessen the more you train. If you aren't acustomed to exercising in this way it could be that you are stretching ligiments that haven't been excersised before, thus causing pain. Is it a stabbing or aching pain?

hi,

sounds like u have shin splints, i've had them 4 about 7 years now, it stoped me from playing football. there r some good sites on the net try www.supports4less.com.

good luck with your race4life........

There are a few different reasons people get shin splints/shin pains... You may be wearing the wrong shoes for your foot type, You may be over training the muscle in that area to hard before it is strong enough to be trained that way...And you might be running to HARD on your legs.. Remeber to watch your form its not about speed its about form when it comes to distance running, when your running make sure your feet are silent, what I mean is, soft soft soft steps.. thats harder but its better. And dont forget to stretch your shin muscle (do so by pointing your tows) and cross train by riding bike.. bike will make your legs very strong for hills and will let your shins heal very well.....Well I hope I could help

GOOD LUCK!!! From a fellow runner/ Personal Trainer

I sometimes get this when Im walking. And I dont me great distances.

I have had this before (I run about 5 times a week) and went to see a masseur who showed me how to massage the shins to help ease the congestion in the muscles. You basically have to dig in between the shin bone and muscle quite hard with your fingers and give it a good massage. It hurts but I found it worked. You could also try applying ice packs for a few minutes at a time, I've found that's helped with injuries.
Can't help with your problem Suzannew, but I too am doing Race for Life this year so good luck with that! If you haven't done it before, you will have a fantastic day!
