Do you think they have feelings? Get upset and lonely at being ignored?

I hate the things and very few of us use it because we like the chatter and gossip...but in a short queue at my little store today the self service machine burst into life.....

No-one had been near it yet suddenly it announced....Please take your change...and started firing money out....☺

I guess it just wanted attention....☺

I will happily queue to use a self-service till rather than go to a staffed one. The last thing I want is to talk to anyone. I just want to pay for my shopping!

But nice things happen when you talk to people........I had an almost new fridge freezer I was going to sell for next to nothing...talking to the girl behind the counter I discovered a single mum whose fridge had just given up the ghost and she was in a bit of a pickle......I gave her the one I had.

So it's good to chat to folks.....☺

I don't use them for a few reasons, though I can see their attraction for some.

I scan my own shopping for a consumer survey group when I get home so don't really want to do it twice.

I get all the bleeps without the telling off LOL, the kids love to do it if they are here.
I find the ones in Tesco are quite helpful and laid back.
The ones in Morrisons seem to have been programmed by the Gestapo the way they order you about and give you no time to sort your bags out.
Or is it just me?
In the little Tesco I go in a lot there always seems to be a bigger queue for the self check out tills than the staffed ones so bizarrely they can be quicker to use!

A supervisor in Morrisons ended up scanning my shopping for me as it just flagged up something on everything I scanned!
I like them because they don't hold me up by chatting to the previous customer about the trivia of their lives.
Here in Norfolk, some people stand there until someone puts their groceries through the scanner and someone else puts them into the bag!
I have feelings too, so I avoid them like the plague. They never seem to work for me. I get unexpected item in the bagging area loud announcement, and people from those waiting look at me. Then I have bought a bottle of plonk, so loudly Approval Needed! Look round for the poor girl in the area who is trying to serve all the poor nerds trying to self serve. It is not what I need when I am trying to buy and pay, nothing more nothing less. I have never seen a machine shoot out money ........ swallow it yes. Give nothing yes.
If someone else's shopping gets scanned and slides down into my shopping before I've finished packing, I slide it right back. There is no need for rudeness at tills and no-one is in that much of a hurry to warrant it. Morrisson's are terrible for rushing through to the next customer grrr...
I avoid them, I refuse to have a machine tell me what to do / im an adult.
I had problems yesterday when I tried to scan a coupon. It wouldn't accept the coupon so I had to check the date. My glasses were in the bag I was packing and when I got my glasses out, it shouted at me for removing an item from the bagging area. I got in a terrible mess and had to put up my hand and wait for assistance. You feel such a fool!

Do you know....this is the same shop where I found money in the outside cash machine.....couldn't find the owner so I treated a very ill lady to a little something and donated the rest....wasn't a huge amount.

But maybe I'll hang around this store more often.....☻
Depends on the cashier ;)
Hate them and they sense this. I try to avoid using them wherever possible now, despite all the coaxing from the store staff, these machines hate me too as each time I have tried to build up a rapport with them they go into overdrive on each item I scan through shouting obscenities out such as 'Please place item in bagging area' and 'unexpected item in bagging area' and 'please wait for assistance'.
'Do you want to continue.' No! Bag off!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who hasn't bonded with one of these machines....☺
If it had haapened in Manchester, chances are it would have disappeared fast!

Eve....rotten thing to do....fancy being so mean.....x
I flatly refuse to use them. I used them about 3 times when they were first installed at Asda mainly for the novelty effect, but each time I had to call the assistant as it has misread an item or spewed my card out for no reason, wasting so much time. Now I will not use them and hate the fact that Sainsburys in my town are closing more and more checkouts in the hope that customers will have to use them. I was ordered by a young man to "come over and use these self service tills please, as we are closing that checkout" "No way!" I said "I object to being ordered to do that, I'm staying where I am" He looked at me in the most patronising manner and offered to guide me through the procedure but I stood my ground still refusing and do you know ? they meekly waited until after I'd been served before closing! A small but great victory for all who hate the things! and the customers around me applauded!!!
I must admit that I occasionaly use them if I have just a few items but I don't like them for most of the reasons already given. However, our local Sainsburys recently did away with about 4\5 tills to put in a bay for Scan and Go (about 2 months ago) and as yet I have never seen it used at any time of the day. Personaly, i think they're inviting shoplifting. Any comments?
I love self service checkouts, no need to turn off my mp3 player :)
