Should I be happy that the council is changing our street lights when I know that in many streets (mine included) they will be switched off at midnight?

Ours stay on until 1am in the Summer but go off at midnight in Winter until we change the clocks tonight. I hate it and it's not a popular decision in our town. They say it does not affect the crime rates but I'm not so sure!
Quite a few councils are doing that now, agree with Ann about the crime rates.
Ours have been switched off at midnight for a few months now. I hate it even tho I don't have to be out at that time.

They are switched on again at 5 am....

And sunrise is?
Changing round here as well but half of ours don't even get switched on. Only the lights on one side of the street get switched on.
Ours changed about 2 months ago. On the plus side it's now dark in the bedroom for sleeping but I hadn't realised how pitch black it would be outside. As I look out over open country I cannot see a thing from the window, not even my car parked outside. It is a bit scary.
We have no streetlights at all here. Having some on up to midnight would be useful.
may i ask how many of you have a decent torch ?
I don't think ours are switched off in the night as they are still on when I leave early for work when it's still dark, maybe with it being an inner city area with higher crime rates and lots of people being out and about late/early. I would feel quite uncomfortable walking to the bus stop when it's dark without the street lights given the amount of muggings, sex attackers, break ins etc... round here.

you should have an outside light triggered by movement installed. You dont want to be sued by the burglar if they trip over something in the dark because you didnt provide them any light.
Ours were swapped a few months back, they are now white light rather than the nasty yellow sodium lights. Better all-round coverage.
Ours go off from midnight to 5am and it is an immensely unpopular decision that I'm sure will dictate which coucillors get elected next time round. There has been a sharp increase in anti social behaviour and the police are saying park your cars in well lit areas, lol. My road is quite busy and I'm opposite a juction so those lights stay on all night so it's not too bad for me, I actually walked home from a party the other night and didn't notice that the lights were out until we walked through an alley which was pitch black.
