They can put Mickey Mouse on it and their pound notes if they wish but it won't be legal tender south of the border. Even now the Scottish currency is viewed with suspicion and after independance it would be treated as a foreign currency. I wonder where it will be minted ?

It's not just some parts of Scotland that has the poond, but its also commonly found in the northeast of Englandshire. But there was the old Scots currency called the pund. Still heard in Dundee butchers' shops from folk buying mince.

All very amusing, but after independence Scotland will retain Sterling as its currency and there's nothing anyone can do to prevent it.

That may be their desire Wharton but I think the Bank of England might have a say in the affair !

They might use the UK pound but they couldn't put anything on it that identified it as Scottish. It wouldn't then be legal tender, however they could have a Scottish pound but it would not have parity with the UK pound. It would just be an other foreign cuerrncy.

Currency sharing makes perfect sense, for a while at least, for businesses on one side of the border who buy and sell with businesses on the other. The SNP have been particularly careful not to go for the "big bang" approach (separate currency, true republic etc) as such fundamental change really would have scared more people into voting no than it would have encouraged people to vote yes.

However, assuming independence were to come, I'm certain that currency separation would happen in only a few years, and a referendum on becoming a republic in about a generation's time.
