after 43 years of smoking I quit 6 years ago. iput on a lot of weight through comfort nibbling, started to exercise more, then broke my back, now hardly able to walk, still heavy but not smoking We know it's not good to be overweight but it's the lesser of 2 evils and i'm told i don't smell like an ashtray > stick with the no smoking and watch your eating habits and exercise( get a greyhound for Xmas !!
I'm 24. I don't smoke a lot (6-7 cigarettes a day), but I consider myself a smoker. I work out at least twice a week, and I don't feel unhealthy, I feel great! I never smoke in small rooms and try to wash my hand and mouth after smoking. No one has complained yet :) Good luck, either way!

Gulyasgirl----I'm not having a go at smokers, in fact they dont bother me one bit, but if you abuse your body you pay for it in the end, you're a lovely age now and can handle anything

PS i must admit i only gave up because my wife had 3 cancer ops

I would say being overweight is better than smoking. Losing weight is hard but it isn;t as hard as giving up smoking. Plus, it depends how overweight you are and where the fat is based. All over-big bum and thighs is a lot safer than round the middle. But WELL DONE for not smoking!!! Get one addiction sorted first and then address the eating.
P.S If you want to lose weight I can really recommend Slimming World- they let you eat as much as you like and you will still lose weight!!
If you can give up smoking, losing weight shouldn't be a problem if you put your mind to it. Try cutting back a bit on the snacks and/or switc to healthier ones. Being overweight definitely better than being a smoker. Just think of all the money you've saved and the fact that smoking does not rule your life any more! As long as you start to lose a bit and then stabilise around your ideal weight, I don't see that a bit of short-term weight gain could be worse for you than smoking. Well done for quitting - you won't regret it!

there's no real reason why people gain weight when they stop smoking

i would suggest following a diet plan such as weight watchers in chich you can eat chocolate but in moderation.

smoking is far worse that being overweight.
