Hi I need to ask a question to see whether this is an exceptable situation.
I have worked for 11 years at my local pub, the last 5 for the present owner. Trade has not been brilliant and I have gone down from 15 hrs a week to 6/7 hrs a week. The problem I have is that I will turn up for a shift and an hour into that shift I am told to go home as there are hardly any customers. This last sunday they asked if I would work my normal sunday shift, as they where going out and knowing it was mothering sunday and wanted to know if this was ok, I said yes as I normally do as work comes first. I arrived and had not even taken my coat off when they said they where no longer going out so I wasn't needed.
On all the times they have sent me home early or like this Sunday when I didn't even get to start the shift I don't get paid. I think this is a bit unfair as I have bent over backwards to help them. I was even in my PJ's the one night at 9.30 when I got a call to ask if I could help them as they where in a bit of a mess ( little boy wouldn't go to bed) , and needed cover behind the bar. I got dressed and went, I was only there for and hour !

I agree with mccfluff. Look for another job. I wouldn't put up with that no matter how long I'd been there. Time to move on.

It's only acceptable if you accept it. Have you got the option of going to find work elsewher? If not they have you over a barrel as long as you keep saying yes.

next time they call you in at short notice, tell them up front you expect paying for the whole shift, if they send you home early that's their issue. I;ve worked in pubs there is always stuff to do, you can keep busy.

They may be within rights but they are being inconsiderate and taking you for granted. You should tell them where they can place their job and go find a decent employer. Not necessarily in that order.

Thank you all. Have told them to stuff it. My next shift would have been tommorrow night, the busiest night of the week for them as it is auction & bingo night. I think that they think I will be expecting me to back down and go in. Would love to be a fly on the wall when I don't show.
