Well yes and no. XP will not look different and the changes made by SP1 are deep within Windows.
You do get a "Set program access and defaults" to play with...
The update fixes many problems with XP. As well as SP1 you'll need the other updates after it...
There has been problems with SP1 as in some peoples computers did not take to well to having this monster installed. So if you do install it have. Make sure you set the option to archive files, so you can remove SP1.
Do not download; order the free CD (month to get to you) or a PC magazine cover disk should have it.

Just to second powerless, definately get service pack 1, it makes the world of difference, and keep up to date with the windows updates as they will protect you from further security attacks (such as the next blaster virus). For archbishop, service packs are groups of patches and fixes that Microsoft have created since the original release of XP. To find out the service pack level, right click "My Computer" > properties > and on the general tab shows the system which includes service pack info. New XP machines are already service packed but the download (see above link) will upgrade legitimate XP copies. Be warned, the download is big and will take forever on a 56k modem; or just grab it off a magazine.
