There is a advert in today newspapers about a 30 day free offer but when you ring a American sounding voice answers and says you would need to pay a pound with your credit card which I am reluctant to do.

Ancestry is brilliant if you are serious about researching your family tree. I wouldn't be without it.

You can get a 14 day free trial but have to give your credit card details first. you also need to remember to cancel before your 14 days are up otherwise they debit your card for a full year. Although saying that, a friend at work managed to sign up for the trial yesterday without giving any card details...

If you want to know what its like before you commit, you can pay 6.99 for 20 searches. You can also pay for a quarterly or half yearly subscription instead of a full year.

I signed up just over a year ago and although I was initially a bit worried about spending nearly 70quid, I have used it almost daily and at less than 20p per day, it has been worth every penny.

BJS. I have researched my family history back to 1690, and did use Ancestry.com. The problem is, there is no 'Unsubscribe' facility and no contact address. You have to telephone America (freephone at the time) and they do their darndest to get you to continue. I would not touch them again. If you live near London, your best option is to join the Society of Genealogists for about 40 a year. Or there is loads of free information on the Web. If you need any more information, let me know.
I have had my ancestry subscription (annual) for years and I can't fault them, I once suspended my account for a while whilst not using it - and I did this on line through the My Account section and it was effortless and without a problem - and when needed I "switched it on again" Massive amount of resources, easy to use - don't store my actual tree on there as I use Tribal Pages for that as I find it earlier to navigate in terms of a 4500 name family tree!!
