does anyone know if their is a memorial anywhere to the disaster that befell the ss royston grange and are their any relatives of any of the crew still out there

Would that be the SS Royston Grange that was sunk on 25th November 1939 by a torpedo fired from the German U-Boat U28, or are you refering to the SS Royston Grange that collided with the Tien Chee in the River Plate on 11th May 1972,exploded and caught fire and was lost with all its crew?

I mean the royston grange disaster on the river plate in 1972 i wasn't aware of the previous one

I think that there is a memorial in the British Cemetery in Montivideo. I believe thats where most of the bodies were buried.
There is also a gravestone in the Aberdour Cemetery with the following inscription :-
"Erected in memory of our dear son and brother Robert George Lyon aged 20y who died 11.5.1972 when SS Royston Grange was lost with all hands after collision and ensuing fire in the River Plate. Interred in the British Cemetery Montivideo"

There is a memorial window to the Royston Grange in All Hallows Church in London. It is near the Tower of London. It was placed there about a year after the disaster and unvieled during a memorial service.

There is a memorial window to the Royston Grange in All Hallow's Church which is near the Tower of London. It was dedicated at a memorial service to the crew and passangers some months (maybe a year) after the disaster. The Royston Grange was hit by a Liberian tanker.

I thought that all of the bodies were in Uraguay as most of them were so badly burned they were unidentifiable (no dna back then).

The Royston Grange was docked and waiting to go into port the next morning, when it was hit by the Liberian tanker 'Twang Che' I think or something similar.

Yes there are relative's of the crew still alive.

Not many people (aside from the merchant navy and of course the realives) know about this accident. What is your interest?

The grave from the Royston Grange disaster is at the British Cemetery in Montevideo on Avenida Gral Rivera 3880 about five miles from the city centre and close to the coast road ( Rambla).

There is a grave and memorial in Montevideo and a commemorative stained glass window in All-Saints Church at Tower Hill (London) which is where many of us studied (School of Navigation). One day I hope to visit the grave to pay my respects to my friend who lost his life on board the Royston Grange.
