MSE - Support for this operating system has expired has come up on my site and a few time switched off.

I was told by somebody here that even though I was warned it would expire on 4 April nothing would happen. I am Windows XP.

It has taken me ages to get on here. I probably need to put on a new virus - any suggestions please - free of course.

Also I inadvertently downloaded a recipe tool bar - which pops up recipes in the middle of me typing. How will I get rid of it. TIA JjCon

Suggest AVG or Avast.

Loads of people will tell you that XP will last a lifetime. It rather depends on your perspective. While it won't stop working itself, over time more and more applications will stop working with it. There's no need for software companies to continue to support an operating system that Microsoft itself doesn't.

jennyjoan. I have had loads of trouble in the past with all sorts of browser until I discovered Mozilla Seamonkey, I suggest that you give it a whirl & forget MSE.

is seamonkey a browser or antivirus - also would I lose my passwords etc. Thanks
Seamonkey is a Browser. What Browser are you using.?

I am thinking that the 'Recipe Tool Bar' is some sort of Malware which came along with another downloaded item which you probably wanted to install. If my thinking is correct then you need to give a Quick Scan of Malwarebytes....the Free Edition...do Not Agree to any Trial of the Premium edition; it's Not necessary.

I do answer questions Methyl - I was out of action all day morning day and night yesterday - I am or was on google chrome - but even that came up saying google chrome not responding - right now am glad to be on anything but would say chrome. As I say I am not very techie. Sorry to be a headache. JJCon

Hans I indeed started to give a quick scan - this is when the system started to stall, jam and indeed crashed. JJCon.
As you are using Google Chrome, I am Not surprised that you are getting problems.

Internet Explorer is still available to you and it would be interesting to know what happens if you use it. Does the mystery Recipe Toolbar still appear?. Does your computer crash as it does with Google Chrome?. ....The more information you give, the better the chances of a solution being established to your unfortunate problem.
