Have you been to Hay-on-Wye - what's it like, which are the best pubs, hotels, cafes, etc in the area? How 'Welsh' is it?

In answer to your question of how welsh is it? not very. you wont hear the language unless it's other visitors talking. Pub wise I like Kilverts which also does good food, but I'm not local enough to have too much knowledge of all the drinking establishments. You'll find loads of places to eat and drink tho and the chinese takeaway is the best! And I'm sure I'm stating the obvious but if you like books, it's defo the place to go!

There is probably some useful information here:

We had a weekend at Hay-On -Wye last year and really enjoyed it. Every other shop is a bookshop, hundreds of them. Thats why we went. We stayed in a farmhouse B+B just about 5 minutes drive away from Hay but there are hotels, guest houses etc actually in Hay on Wye. We had pub and cafe meals, very nice. There were loads of tourists but oddly enough no welsh language. We found everyone really friendly:-))
It's not that odd that there is no welsh language in Hay as it is a border town, you don't have to go far east out of Hay town itself and you are in Herefordshire. You'll see welsh on the road signs though. If it's a Welsh experience you're after you'll have to venture further West!
By saying "Oddly enough" teag1rl, I meant as in tourists from other countries such as Japan, France etc. Maybe if any North Waliens were there then we would have heard the welsh language as they tend to speak only in welsh. Im from S,Wales but I only know bits n bobs:-)
oops, sorry Fina, I misunderstood. I was just making point that if anyone was going there for its 'welshness' they'd be disappointed. I'm from not far from Hay and I only know a few random nouns and how to say my name, where I live and that I like coffee!
