National Insurance Number
7 Answers
My friend has lived in Australia for the last 20 odd years. She has now come back home to look after her Mum. She is also applying for a house through a housing association. She has worked in the UK before going to Oz, so you think it would be easy to find her NI number. (Don't ask me why SHE doesn't know it). She is getting shunted from one office to another. I just can't understand why it would be difficult to find. She previously worked for a council. Would it not just be a matter of phoning them? Thank you

Some paper systems of which the NI nos are an obvious example made a bad transfer to the computerised system.
( oh and my advice is dont have your GP's notes put on a computer - the govt's track record in this is BAD )
another example is Birth Certificates - which went thro' a phase of not being proof of identity ( no computer foot print )
You will not be surprised that i have kept my canadian social security no from 1978. [ just in case they forgot or told me I didnt exist ]

Knowing your nat ins number didn't help me in claiming my private pension. I had to jump through hoops. I sent my driving licence, birth certificate, bill with my address on and it still was not enough. They then asked for valid passport, What if I don't have a passport I said. I sent my passport, eventually I got my pension. Several months late I hasten to add.
